Earliest Lent since 1913

This year we celebrate Easter Sunday on March 23rd, the earliest since 1913. What this means is we have a particularly penitential Lent, which starts almost immediately after we have slogged through the grim month of January. And not only that, for me Lent this year will not be relieved by five feasts: St. Gregory the Great (March 12th), St. Patrick (March 17th), St. Joseph (March 19th), St. Benedict (March 21st) and the Annunciation (March 25th).

This year all the feasts with the exception of St. Gregory are suppressed or transferred as they fall in Holy Week and Eastertide. And as for St. Gregory, I will not be able to go to Downside Abbey to celebrate it as it falls in mid week on Wednesday: they keep the old feastday instead of September 3rd. This is a season I am not looking forward to...

Oliver - Lent is great! Yes, it is difficult, and we give up our favourite foods (and other stuff) but we do this for the love of God, and in the knowledge that we're in it together. And Easter is at the end of it!!

BTW Fr. Tim said it was the earliest Lent since 1858...
